Mestres Cabanes combined his artistic life with teaching. He was professor of perspective and stage design at the Theatre Institute and the Sant Jordi College of Fine Arts. His discoveries in the field of perspective made him a reference in the teaching field.

Mestres Cabanes began his teaching work in 1927 and continued the activity with a praiseworthy vocation. Of these first classes in stage design and perspective at the Barcelona Provincial Council’s Theatre Institute, those given as substitute for Salvador Alarma, who was the tenured post-holder, should be highlighted. While wondering how to find the best angle for Ammeris’ chamber (Aida), he discovered something really important: the master angle. His students in the subject at the Theatre Institute were enthusiastic about him and asked for him to be appointed as tenured lecturer instead of Salvador Alarma. The demand was acceded to by official decree published on 31 October. Mestres put everything into this teaching job and created eighteen theatre set models for his students, who sent a note to the Institute director praising the new tenured lecturer.

In 1945 he began the academic year with a lecture entitled “The master angle for stage design”. The students identified with their teacher and worked hard to get good results. At the end of the year, Mestres organised an exhibition with his students’ work, stimulating their self-esteem and encouraging them to try to achieve the highest possible level.

In 1959 he secured the post of professor of perspective in fine arts after a tough competitive examination. Based on his work for this examination, he wrote his well-known Tratado de perspectiva (Treatise on perspective), an essential reference for all fine arts students.
